Description

COSC 2 as part of the ‘Collisional Orogeny in the Scandinavian Caledonides’ (COSC) drilling project, represents an integral of the Swedish Scientific Drilling Program (SSDP) in the frame of the International Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP). As a consequence of the closure of the Iapetus Ocean and the corresponding continent-continent collision between Baltica and Laurentia during Early Palaeozoic times, the Baltoscandian margin was partially subducted beneath Laurentia in the mid-late  Silurian forming a Himalayan-type orogen. The COSC project studies these processes, COSC 1 investigated the emplacement of high-grade metamorphic allochthons in the Åre area and COSC-2 aimed to study a substantial, continuous Early Palaeozoic sedimentary succession (Lower Allochthon and Autochthon), the main Caledonian décollement in the Cambrian Alum Shale succession and the Fennoscandian granitic basement. However, the scientific drilling (starting in April 2020) recorded an unexpected, but extremely interesting core succession. Drilling finished in August 2020 at the depth of 2276.05m not in a Palaeoproterozoic granitic basement but within a thick volcanic sequence developed in a younger Proterozoic rift basin. Seismic interpretations and geophysical models are in disagreement with the lithological
sequence in the drill core. The volcanic succession and intrusives (dolerites) in the lower part show lithological similarities to rocks known in and around the Sijan impact structure further south which relate to the Mesoproterozoic Dalarna-Ladoga rift system. The shear bodies in the imbricate zone above this unexpected basement are not composed by Alum Shales but by Proterozoic and Cambrian sandstones of different ages and originating presumably from quite different settings and environments. A major décollement formed at the base of an only 50m thick Alum Shale. The whole Early Palaeozoic succession above is composed of exclusively siliciclastic deposits which probably formed in more outboard and deeper environments than assumed before.
Due to these circumstances, detailed sedimentological and stratigraphic studies, and dating of the units are most important. Building up some good stratigraphic framework is absolutely essential as a base for further correlations with geotectonic events, sea-level fluctuations and climate change as well as for the re-interpretation of seismic models. The focus and the results of this project provide the base for future interdisciplinary studies and projects performed by different working groups of the COSC science team. Close cooperations with the PIs for other research topics such as geochronology, geothermics, geology, and geophysics are a main focus of the project. These cooperations will be important for the calibration of borehole geophysical data as well as for a reasonable geothermal model and a realistic interpretation of the reflexion seismic data from the subsurface in the study area.
